300 of Maine's most important fishing grounds. Hake Ground.  North of Monhegan,  name because of  abundance of hake in  June, July, August. Extends from just outside White Head to abreast of Monhegan's  northern side. Depths 20 - 45 fathoms. Haddock in December and January. Hatchell Ground.    9½ miles SE. by E 3/4 E.  from western head of Isle au Haute.  1 mile  diameter; a small shoal of about 15 fathoms.  25 - 40 fathoms over most of the ground,  shoaler near center. Bottom sharp & rocky on shoals; sides gravelly, pebbly. Blue Hill Ground. 7 miles E by S ¾ S from western head of Isle au Haute. 25 fathoms on NE part of ground, deepening SW  to 40 fathoms 1 mile from 1/2 mile wide shoaler part.  Bottom: gravel and pebbles. Cod in  spring and fall. Haddock all winter Grumpy.  2½ miles long by 3/4 mile wide;  35 to 40 fathoms over  gravelly bottom. Small shoal of 14 fathoms on the northeast part. One of best inshore cod grounds for entire year & for haddock in winter. Hake just off the southeast edge in summer. Gilkey Ground  4 miles S. from western head of Isle au Haute. 1½ miles  by 1/3 mile.  Rocky bottom on shoals; 23  to 35 fathoms on the SW part, where bottom gravelly and smooth.  Cod in spring and fall,  haddock in winter.  Hake on the edges in summer. Barley Hill Ground.  NNE. from Seal Island & SSW from  western head of Isle au Haute,  in  between them. 3 ½ miles  from each. Circular, 28-30 fathoms. Bottom:  mud & rocks.  Cod: spring & fall. Hake: Summer in mud & rocks. Occasional halibut June & July Southwest Ground.  2 miles SW. from  western head of Isle au Haute. Circular in form ½ mile diameter. Gravelly bottom. Depths 35 to 40 fathoms. Cod  April - June & September - November.  Hake  in summer close to Isle au Haute. A good lobster ground. Western Reef; Otter Island Reef; Snipper Shin.  An irregular rocky ground between Vinalhaven & Seal Island. 10 to 25 fathoms Otter Island Reef is eastern section; Snipper Shin & Western Reef  to west. Cod winter & spring. Haddock November-January. Lobster Towhead Grounds  2½ miles N by E ½ E of Matinicus Island. 12 to 30 fathoms. Irregular In shape.  2 ½ to 3 miles long. ½ to 1 ½ miles wide.Very rocky, broken bottom.One of  best inside grounds for cod and haddock in Penobscot Bay.  Good lobster grounds. Inner Breaker.  2 miles W. of the SW point of Matinicus. One acre rocky shoal. 7 fathoms, sloping to  25 - 30 fathoms. This slope furnishes good fishing for cod in May and June. Haddock in December and January. Hake on  edge of  ground in summer. Crie Ridges. 4 miles NW. from Matinicus Rock. 4 miles WSW. from Criehaven or Ragged Island, and run SE. from Western Ground toward Matinicus, distant 4½ to 5 miles. Western Ridge & Pigeon Ground. 6½ miles NW. by W. from Matinicus Rock.  7 miles long,1 mile wide. Depths 15 - 30 fathoms. Bottom  broken & rocky. Cod in spring & fall. Haddock in June, November & December. Hake in summer. Halibut  in 10 fathoms on sand. A Hake Ground.  Summer hake ground extends from 3 miles ESE. of Seal Island to 4 miles SSE of  Wooden Ball Island. About 7 ½ miles long by some 2 ½ miles wide. The depths here are from 35 to 60 fathoms. Gravel Bottom & Southeast Ground.  S of Seal Island. 5-10 mile diameter; fairly level ground. Eastern portion 40-60 fathoms, muddy. Western 35 - 40 fathoms.  Good cod ground in winter & spring. Haddock:  November - March, inclusive; hake in summer. The Bounties. 6 miles  SE. by S 1/2 S  from Wooden Ball Island. Circular in form, 4 miles across; depths 40 - 60 fathoms. Broken bottom of gravel and rocks. Cod & cusk in spring & fall. Haddock in winter. Summer, hake between Seal Island & Wooden Ball Bald Ridges. These begin just outside Wooden Ball Island and run off in a nearly direct line for Matinicus Rock. Each 1/4 to ½ mile wide,15 - 30 fathoms. Cod in spring, rock cod. Haddock: January 1 - February 15, Hake in summer on mud bottom. Good lobster Henry Marshalls Ground This ground lies S. by W. from Matinicus Rock about 3 miles; its area is about 2 acres. The shoaler portion has a depth of 35 fathoms and a gravelly bottom; on the edge the depth is 45 fathoms and the bottom is of rocks and mud. Minerva Hub.  This bears SSE. from Matinicus Rock, distant 6 miles. This Is a small, gravelly spot about 1/4 mile in diameter and with a depth of 35 fathoms. abounding with cod in spring and fall. It is a summer ground for hake and cusk.
