Hake Ground.  North of Monhegan,  name because of  abundance of hake in  June, July, August. Extends from just outside White Head to abreast of Monhegan's  northern side. Depths 20 - 45 fathoms. Haddock in December and January. Hatchell Ground.    9½ miles SE. by E 3/4 E.  from western head of Isle au Haute.  1 mile  diameter; a small shoal of about 15 fathoms.  25 - 40 fathoms over most of the ground,  shoaler near center. Bottom sharp & rocky on shoals; sides gravelly, pebbly. Blue Hill Ground. 7 miles E by S ¾ S from western head of Isle au Haute. 25 fathoms on NE part of ground, deepening SW  to 40 fathoms 1 mile from 1/2 mile wide shoaler part.  Bottom: gravel and pebbles. Cod in  spring and fall. Haddock all winter Grumpy.  2½ miles long by 3/4 mile wide;  35 to 40 fathoms over  gravelly bottom. Small shoal of 14 fathoms on the northeast part. One of best inshore cod grounds for entire year & for haddock in winter. Hake just off the southeast edge in summer. Gilkey Ground  4 miles S. from western head of Isle au Haute. 1½ miles  by 1/3 mile.  Rocky bottom on shoals; 23  to 35 fathoms on the SW part, where bottom gravelly and smooth.  Cod in spring and fall,  haddock in winter.  Hake on the edges in summer. Barley Hill Ground.  NNE. from Seal Island & SSW from  western head of Isle au Haute,  in  between them. 3 ½ miles  from each. Circular, 28-30 fathoms. Bottom:  mud & rocks.  Cod: spring & fall. Hake: Summer in mud & rocks. Occasional halibut June & July Southwest Ground.  2 miles SW. from  western head of Isle au Haute. Circular in form ½ mile diameter. Gravelly bottom. Depths 35 to 40 fathoms. Cod  April - June & September - November.  Hake  in summer close to Isle au Haute. A good lobster ground. Western Reef; Otter Island Reef; Snipper Shin.  An irregular rocky ground between Vinalhaven & Seal Island. 10 to 25 fathoms Otter Island Reef is eastern section; Snipper Shin & Western Reef  to west. Cod winter & spring. Haddock November-January. Lobster Towhead Grounds  2½ miles N by E ½ E of Matinicus Island. 12 to 30 fathoms. Irregular In shape.  2 ½ to 3 miles long. ½ to 1 ½ miles wide.Very rocky, broken bottom.One of  best inside grounds for cod and haddock in Penobscot Bay.  Good lobster grounds. Inner Breaker.  2 miles W. of the SW point of Matinicus. One acre rocky shoal. 7 fathoms, sloping to  25 - 30 fathoms. This slope furnishes good fishing for cod in May and June. Haddock in December and January. Hake on  edge of  ground in summer. Crie Ridges. 4 miles NW. from Matinicus Rock. 4 miles WSW. from Criehaven or Ragged Island, and run SE. from Western Ground toward Matinicus, distant 4½ to 5 miles. Western Ridge & Pigeon Ground. 6½ miles NW. by W. from Matinicus Rock.  7 miles long,1 mile wide. Depths 15 - 30 fathoms. Bottom  broken & rocky. Cod in spring & fall. Haddock in June, November & December. Hake in summer. Halibut  in 10 fathoms on sand. A Hake Ground.  Summer hake ground extends from 3 miles ESE. of Seal Island to 4 miles SSE of  Wooden Ball Island. About 7 ½ miles long by some 2 ½ miles wide. The depths here are from 35 to 60 fathoms. Gravel Bottom & Southeast Ground.  S of Seal Island. 5-10 mile diameter; fairly level ground. Eastern portion 40-60 fathoms, muddy. Western 35 - 40 fathoms.  Good cod ground in winter & spring. Haddock:  November - March, inclusive; hake in summer. The Bounties. 6 miles  SE. by S 1/2 S  from Wooden Ball Island. Circular in form, 4 miles across; depths 40 - 60 fathoms. Broken bottom of gravel and rocks. Cod & cusk in spring & fall. Haddock in winter. Summer, hake between Seal Island & Wooden Ball Bald Ridges. These begin just outside Wooden Ball Island and run off in a nearly direct line for Matinicus Rock. Each 1/4 to ½ mile wide,15 - 30 fathoms. Cod in spring, rock cod. Haddock: January 1 - February 15, Hake in summer on mud bottom. Good lobster Henry Marshalls Ground This ground lies S. by W. from Matinicus Rock about 3 miles; its area is about 2 acres. The shoaler portion has a depth of 35 fathoms and a gravelly bottom; on the edge the depth is 45 fathoms and the bottom is of rocks and mud. Minerva Hub.  This bears SSE. from Matinicus Rock, distant 6 miles. This Is a small, gravelly spot about 1/4 mile in diameter and with a depth of 35 fathoms. abounding with cod in spring and fall. It is a summer ground for hake and cusk. Metinic Ooze. This is a flat bottom, composed of ooze and shells, that makes off to the eastward of the Haddock Ledge and Shoal and bears about S. from Matinic. The Haddock Shoal and the Ooze are really parts of one ground. Franklin Ground.  NE. by N. midway between Monhegan and Burnt Island, distant 4 miles. Cod and haddock are found here from April to June and pollock in summer. In summer and fall hake are taken by night fishing with hand line about the rocks. Blue Ground. This is  14 miles SE 1 ½ E from Monhegan; and SW from Matinicus Rock 9 miles to southern edge. Circular in form and about 2 miles across. A small broken and rocky shoal in the center of 28 - 30 fathoms; the bottom slopes off to 45 and 60 fath Matinicus Sou'Sou'West Grounds. These grounds bear  six miles SSW. from Matinicus Rock. About 9 miles N. and S. & about the same width,  nearly triangular in shape, broadest at the northern end. On the northern part  is a shoal of about 30 fathoms 2 miles Monhegan Southeast Ground.  SE from Monhegan Island, the center distant 12 miles. This is nearly circular, 3 miles in diameter. The bottom is so broken that depths may vary much within a short distance, but depths are from 35 to 75 fathoms. Hill Ground. SSW 9 miles from Matinic, between 3 - 4 miles long NE and SW and  2 miles wide. The shoalest part has 35 fathoms and a rocky bottom. Slopes gradually to 50 fathoms over  bottom of mixed gravel, rocks and mud. Its best fishing is for hake. Freemans Ground.  6 ½ miles F. from Monhegan Island between Ornes Ground & Matlnicus Western Ground. 3 miles long and 1 mile wide; runs in a NE. & SW. direction. A  20 fathom shoal on the southwest part having  a sharp rocky bottom. Burnt Island, Inner Ridge  aka Andrews Shoal This is NE. by E. from Monhegan, distant 5 miles. It is a broken ground with depths from 15 to 20 fathoms, the bottom rocky and gravelly, with occasional mud holes. Black Ledges Ground. This ground lies between Jordan's Delight and the Halibut Ledges, or Black Ledges. Allens Shoal, Middle Shoal, Pollock Rip, Deckers Shoal. Small rocky patches lying to eastward of Monhegan Island and northerly from the Outer Shoal. Cod in spring during the herring season and in the fall in Monhegan Inner Sou'Southeast Ground . SSE from Monhegan Light. Circular; 1/14 miles across. Center is 5 miles from the light. Depths 30-50 fathoms, shoalest on the eastern part. Cod & cusk in spring, summer and fall. Few haddock. Pollock, hake, in fall. Ornes Ground. 4 1/2 miles E of Monhegan Light. 1 mile long E. & W. 1 mile wide. Depths 30 to 45 fathoms. Spring cod ground; pollock in spring and fall. Hake in September and October. Herring in May and June. Good lobster ground.
